What Does the World Look Like in Your Eyes? A Lesson on Perspective

Leo sat on a moss-covered stone bench in the heart of an ancient village in Yunnan, China. His expensive DSLR camera lay forgotten at his side. For a man who had traveled to sixty countries, he felt strangely blind. To him, the cobblestones were just slippery, the rain was just wet, and the mist was just a nuisance for his lens. He felt that he had seen it all, and in doing so, he had stopped seeing anything at all.

Then, a small girl named Meimei sat down next to him. She wasn't looking at the mountains or the famous pagoda. She was staring intently at a small crack in the pavement where a single blade of grass was struggling to grow. She looked up at Leo, her eyes bright with a curiosity he had long since buried.

Leo froze. It was a question no one had asked him in years. He realized he didn't have a good answer.

Leo looked at the girl and then back at the crack in the stone. “I see a gray village,” he admitted. “I see rain that makes my camera wet. To be honest, I think the world looks a bit tired today.”

Meimei giggled and shook her head. “那是因为你只用眼睛看，没有用心看。” (Nà shì yīnwèi nǐ zhǐ yòng yǎnjīng kàn, méiyǒu yòng xīn kàn.) [That’s because you only use your eyes to look, not your heart.] She pointed at the blade of grass. “To me, this is a brave soldier fighting a giant. The rain is the music for his victory parade. 叔叔，，决定了你快乐不快乐。” (Shūshu, nǐ yǎnzhōng de shìjiè shì shénme yàngzi de, juédìng le nǐ kuàilè bù kuàilè.) [Uncle, what the world looks like in your eyes determines whether you are happy or not.]

Leo was struck by her wisdom. He spent the rest of the afternoon with her. They walked through the market. Leo saw crowded stalls and muddy floors. Meimei saw a "festival of smells" and "dancing shadows." Every time they stopped, she would challenge him: “现在，” (Xiànzài, nǐ yǎnzhōng de shìjiè shì shénme yàngzi de?) [Now, what does the world look like in your eyes?]

Slowly, Leo’s vision began to shift. He noticed the way the light reflected off an old man's copper kettle. He saw the genuine smiles of the vegetable sellers. He started to realize that the "boring" world was actually a masterpiece hidden in plain sight. He realized that when people ask, “”, they are really asking about your imagination.

In Chinese culture, the way you view the world is summarized by the word 观 (guān), which means "to observe" or "outlook." This leads to the three fundamental "Outlooks" in Chinese philosophy:
1. 世界观 (Shìjièguān) – Worldview / Philosophy of life.
2. 人生观 (Rénshēngguān) – Outlook on life / Values.
3. 价值观 (Jiàzhíguān) – Values / System of principles.

When Meimei asks Leo about his world, she is essentially touching upon his 世界观. In China, it is believed that a "broad" (开阔 kāikuò) worldview leads to a more peaceful and successful life.
